Reviewing “Understanding EQ” video from Joe Gilder and Home Studio Corner.

The name “Joe Gilder” is synonymous with recording, and the whole home studio movement. One common issue with home recording studios music is that it can seem like it was recorded in a home setting, and not in a professional setting. You see, there is actually a lot to learn about each step of the process. There are industry professionals for a reason! This post is a review for “Understanding EQ” one of the great training videos from Joe Gilder, and Home Studio Corner.

Learning how to record instruments into a modern D.A.W.s is not a walk in the park. After you have recorded your multiple track sessions you will need to learn how to mix them down to a stereo file using EQ, compression, and a whole host of tricks of the trade. When you have a few “rough mix downs” complete, you will need to learn how to “master” those, or make them sound cohesive and professional.

Let’s be honest here. Each one of these steps is a career all by itself. People work these careers their whole life and still learn new things every day. We can’t equal that level of professionalism in our homes; can we?

Truth is, we can come close, and have a blast each step of the way. That is, as long as we watch training videos from guys like Joe Gilder. Joe knows audio. Boom. “Understanding EQ” was a complete eye opener for me, and I really learned a lot from just watching it! Please know that I was skeptical about watching it, too, thinking I knew everything about EQ, and how to apply EQ in my recording processes. Wrong!

Truth is that with each tip and trick that we learn and master, our musical creations will sound better and better. The training videos that Joe Gilder makes (just like “Understanding EQ“) under the name of his great website, “Home Studio Corner”, teach us how to get our recordings to sound way more professional.

One common mistake that people make is to think the key to better recordings is obtaining better recording gear. Learning how to record, mix, and master is what will get you there the fastest. Keep your expensive gear purchases for when you get better. Take it from me, because I am guilty of thinking that way, even though it was so long ago.

Each one of these two video training products contains lots and lots of “How to” style videos that are made up of “screen capture” style videos, shot right inside my very own home studio, like you are sitting down with me. Each training product inside the Home Recording Weekly “Ultimate Bonus Offer” has been recorded, edited, and mixed down with a few main things in mind…

First, I know that “Content is king”. Each video contains quality, unique content that I, personally, just could not find anywhere else.

Next, the quality of the audio and the quality of the picture is the best I have ever produced. I worked very hard to create video training that is helpful in nature, unique in content, and killer in features like audio and subject. These are the best mixing and mastering tips and techniques that I have learned, that have taken my music over the top, and rocketed my skill sets to the best they have ever been.

Let me break down, quickly, what is covered in each training series:

The Pro Mixers Playbook

Learning how to mix like the pros can be the most rewarding thing we ever do. It can also be the most frustrating thing we ever do. Why does learning how to mix have to be so difficult?

The truth is there is a lot of information out there, broken up into quick little video chunks, some over here, and some over there, and, well, in a lot of different places. Learning just one brand new mixing technique can take you to many different places that all seem to have somewhat competing information.

For this very reason, I have been hard at work, putting something rather special together that I call “The Pro Mixers Playbook”. I have made over 4.5 hours of training videos together, in one easy to download PDF file. I have listed, and then made corresponding videos for the most powerful, the most “mix-shaping” 15 Pro mixing plays that have had the most impact (hands down) with my own mixes. This is a mixing foundation just waiting to happen. There is something new and rewarding, for new mixers and pros alike, inside in “The Pro Mixers Playbook”.

DIY Mastering

Learning how to master can be confusing too. Figuring out how to get our stereo tracks to sound clean, wide, big, phat, and massive is a struggle. There are a lot of conflicting videos online that all help to confuse the viewer and help wreck your music. There is nothing else online quite like “DIY Mastering”, I guarantee it.

Included in “DIY Mastering” are training style videos that explain some of the most helpful, most impactful mastering techniques that have all come together to make my masters sound clear, clean, and huge. Video after video we go deeper and deeper into the strategies that really matter when it comes to getting great sounding masters.

Understanding EQ” and how to use EQ is important, damn important! It is up there in importance with compression. I reviewed “Understanding Compression”, from Joe Gilder and Home Studio Corner, if you think you might like to read about that training video too.

Here is what I learned while watching “Understanding EQ“.

Joe starts off with his amazing 30 day money back guarantee. He stands by this offer, and I know see why. He holds nothing back, and he gives you all he knows about EQ! This video is full of terms and there meanings, like decibels, pitch, frequency, and hertz.

Joe quickly moves into what the types of EQ’s are, and how they differ from each other. Joe then opens up a ProTools song file and explains a common trap people fall for, when using EQ. I will not fall for that trap again……., meaning I have in the past. Next Joe details what all of the knobs, dials, and switches on most EQ’s mean, and what they do. Gold!

Actually sitting down with someone that knows this stuff is the way I like to learn. This is as close to that as I have ever gotten. Look, forget all of those five minute YouTube videos that only half explain a topic like EQ. Those raise more questions than they answer, right?

Next, and still in the first video here, Joe explains things like notch filters, high pass filters, low pass filters, shelving filters, and bell curves. Joe also explains why there is an input and an output gain on most EQ’s. This is a lot of content guys! This is where the beef is, and has been, all along!

There is no way to learn EQ like using EQ in a song mixing session. This is just one of the best ways to learn, I should think. Joe starts off video 2 with a very cool EQ trick. This trick is new to me, and I have since learned more about mixing with EQ from this one trick then I have learned from all other tricks of the trade. This is a way to actually “hear” what is happening in a song, frequency wise, across the whole spectrum. I bet you are shocked as you listen along to the frequencies! I was!

There is a bunch of audio examples that comes with the videos too. This is great for listening/training wherever you listen to music. This is a great idea, and I found it a great way to re-enforce what we had learned together!

Joe really details the EQ frequency bands, and he details what sorts of things live there. Perhaps most importantly, he details what one should listen for when listening, and applying EQ. After all, we must learn how to listen, and then how to apply EQ, right? “Understanding EQ”  has explained all of that, and quite well I might add.

So, everything that you may have ever heard about using EQ, and everything that you have not heard about EQ is explained in “Understanding EQ“. I learned a ton about all of the different parts of the EQ. I learned a ton about filters too. I will never forget, and I can’t wait to use the cool new EQ trick that Joe showed us. That trick alone will help me out a lot in my mixing future!

The best thing about “Understanding EQ” is that now I have confidence. I am confident that I am using EQ to the best of my abilities, and just like the professionals apply EQ! How much is that worth to you?

Please read my complete review of  Understanding Compression, also from Joe Gilder, and decide if you want to purchase it for yourself. I break down each video for you, and tell you just what you can expect. Then you can purchase Understanding Compression from this link or please head over to his website and find the title you are looking for.
